Gary Curneen: Head Coach
Gary Curneen enters his third season at the helm of the Roadrunner women’s soccer team in fall of 2016. He became CSU Bakersfield’s fourth women’s soccer head coach on Mar. 4, 2014.
In his first year at CSUB, Curneen led the team to a 4-16-1 record and a trip to the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. Curneen’s team succeeded on the field and in the classroom as 11 ‘Runners earned WAC All-Academic team honors and two student-athletes were named to the All-WAC teams in 2014.
Year Two featured a return trip to the WAC Tournament, which CSUB hosted in Bakersfield. The ‘Runners clinched the fifth seed after a 3-5-2 record in the WAC and defeated New Mexico State, 2-1, for the program’s first-ever postseason victory at the Division I level. The ‘Runners enjoyed one of the most prolific seasons since moving to Division I and finished the year with a 6-12-3 record.
Clifton Bush: Assistant Coach
Clifton Bush begins his third season with the CSU Bakersfield women's soccer team in fall of 2016. After working the 2014 season as a volunteer assistant, Bush was named first assistant in 2015.
Tasked with overseeing the CSUB goalkeepers, Bush coached Tori Ornela to one of the most prolific careers in CSUB history. Ornela graduated in 2016 with the all-time school record in career saves with 369 and the second-most wins in CSUB history with 18. The keeper also had the seventh-most career saves among all active NCAA Division I keepers at the end of her career.
Bush, a Tehachapi, Calif., native, brings a long history of college, regional, and academy soccer coaching experience to the CSUB program in his new role where he will be the team’s primary recruiter, work with goalkeepers, and focus on implementing the team’s model of play. Bush joined the academy coaching staff in 2014 for the NWSL Championship winning Portland Thorns. The Thorns Academy is one of only two girls programs in the country with a direct connection to a NWSL team.
